Knowing what exercise to do isn’t enough, here’s why:

I’d bet good money that you’ve done at least one internet search for a workout program or nutrition plan to help you reach your goals.

Am I right?

You may have even found THIS article through such a search.

The good news is that this interwebs thing happens to hold a TON of information. A simple search should yield hundreds, if not thousands of websites with daily workouts, hundreds of recipes, nutrition plans, and other sites blogging about what you should be eating and/or not eating.

There are 2 major problems that come from this:

1) With so much information, how do you know what is correct and what is safe?

2) Most of this information you’ll find only talks about the WHAT factor.

The first problem is an easy answer: With a coach. However, I’ll expand on that answer in another post because today I want to talk about the WHAT factor.

The common factor in what you’ll find on the internet is that they only talk about the WHAT. Things like: what to eat, what not to eat, what exercise to do when you workout, what exercise is best for shredding your abs, what are the best sources of antioxidants, what amount of sleep you should get, and what are the benefits of a standing desk.

So with all of this abundance of what to do, why are so few people actually doing it? Where are the results?

The information is there, but why aren’t we using it?

My concern with the WHAT approach is that it yields only short term results.

Learning what to do always starts out great but eventually people go back to their normal routine and old habits. A select few will have the motivation and persistence to stick to it, but this is usually because they have already have the most important part…

What’s typically missing from all the WHAT information out there is any approach to WHY you’d want to do it in the first place.

If you don’t know why you’re doing something, chances are that you’re not going to stay motivated to do it for very long.

If you know the WHY, the WHAT becomes easy.

In my opinion, too many people are constantly in a search for WHAT. They want to know what will get them their results as quick as possible. This fails time and time again because they don’t know WHY they’re doing it in the first place. Once you know your WHY, you’ll actually follow through with the what.

  1. I workout because I feel stronger and healthier when I do. I’m convinced that going Paleo and Crossfit have both helped me in my “fight” against Stage IV breast cancer. One year after first being diagnosed I am coming back strong and I look healthy. The cancer is even starting to disappear! I am at a healthy weight despite being on hormone therapy (which is supposed to cause weight gain). I have gained weight since last year but I’m certainly not overweight by any means.
