Most people have a goal in mind when they start their fitness journey.
Some goals are super specific, others are more general, but you always have a target you want to reach.
However, what I see missing for a lot of people is a clear recognition of where they are starting from.
Let me explain with an analogy:
If you put your friends address in google maps, you now know where they live.
However, if you want directions, you also need to tell google where you are starting from. Without that knowledge, it doesn’t matter that you know where you want to go, you’ll never actually get there!
The same is true for me and someone’s fitness goals.
However, I’m not just talking about knowing your current weight or bodyfat percentage.
What I’m REALLY talking about is your capacity to do what needs to be done.
Are you able to put the intensity needed in your workouts?
Are you able to put in the consistency of workouts each week?
Do you have the will power to say no to certain food temptations?
Do you have the knowledge of how and why certain things work for you?
These are key factors in being able to truly reach your goal.
In fact, for most people, these actually ARE THE GOALS!
For example, I can give you a great workout program that’s going to help you build muscle and lose fat. But, if you aren’t doing the workouts because you haven’t built the ability to remain consistent, the program is literally worthless. It has zero value if you aren’t doing it.
It’s important to get a good assessment of where you are starting from in order to reach your goals. Not just scale weight or body fat percentage, but other things like physical capacity, habits and will power.
Your program/plan needs to address where you are starting from, not just where you’re gong!
So the real question is: do you really know where you are starting from?
