Why Stress Is Preventing Your Fat Loss

Stress is an everyday thing, it’s hard to avoid… whether it’s your daily commute in the morning or your boss at work – living in the 21st century is stressful but what does that have to do with your fat loss goals? It has everything to do with a hormone called Cortisol.

Cortisol is a hormone produced in the adrenal glands, commonly known as the “stress hormone”.

It’s released in response to different circumstances such as waking, exercising, and stress. Cortisol can have serious impacts on sleep and weight gain, thus inhibiting fat loss. This is one reason why people experiencing a lot of stress struggle with reaching their fitness goals. The key with cortisol is not necessarily to reduce it absolutely, but to control it.

A sharp rise in cortisol is not a bad thing – Cortisol is the fight or flight hormone. Cortisol spikes are simply the natural adrenal response to stress, the problem is when cortisol is chronically elevated – a far too common occurrence for many of us. With continuously elevated levels of cortisol, the body enters the adrenal resistance phase.

During this phase, the endocrine system will focus on creating stress hormones (cortisol), at the expense of other hormones.

Why Stress Is Preventing Your Fat Loss

One serious side effect to high levels of cortisol is weight gain, particularly visceral fat, which is the most dangerous kind.

One-way that cortisol is involved in weight gain is it has an impact on insulin and blood sugar. Cortisol obstructs the effect of insulin, essentially creating a general insulin-resistant state within the body when cortisol levels are elevated.

Studies have shown that high levels of cortisol are also directly linked to increased appetite, particularly for high calorie foods. Throw the fact that raised cortisol levels can negatively impact sleep, and it’s a fat loss disaster.

The bottom line is many of us are over-worked, too stressed, and have Cortisol levels that are way too high.
